UKRAINE-POLAND BORDER ~ APRIL, 2022

Photo collage from Natan Self Care project for refugee women ~ Tesco Refugee Center, Poland

When the war broke out in Ukraine in February 2022, I found myself searching for something meaningful to do.

I had the privilege of joining a trauma relief team  of Israeli Russian and Ukrainian doctors, nurses and social workers. Our team met thousands of refugees from Ukraine who crossed the border every day, most in shock trauma, some wounded from bombings.

Most of the refugees were displaced women, children, and elderly, who left their husbands, sons, fathers behind to fight in a brutal war. Many elderly wanted to stay in or near Poland to be close to go back to their homes that were demolished.

The women showed unbelievable strength and courage.

Their strength and resilience in the face of adversity left a lasting impression on me.

Here is a story of one of these brave women:  A 20 year old young mother and her 2-week old baby girl.

East Africa HIV/AIDS Epidemic

As a young graduate student at the University of Texas in Austin, I had the privilege to do my practicum at WAMATA - an HIV/AIDS non profit combating the virus in East Africa. In 1989, Theresia Kaijage, my field supervisor, founded WAMATA, which continues to educate and provide counseling services to those with HIV/AIDS.  “Walio Katika Mapambano na AIDS Tanzania” (WAMATA)  has been at the forefront of combating HIV/AIDS in Tanzania through various impactful initiatives and programs.
My field professor and co-founder of the social work placement in Dar es Salaam, was Cal Streeter, Ph.D., Meadows Foundation Centennial Professor in the Quality of Life in rural community development, program planning and implementation, and program evaluation.
